For contemporary/timeless accessories, Tyler Ellis is the go-to handbag label; combining beautifully thoughtful shapes with an east-meets-west coast attitude, these bags are the best of both worlds – cool and classic.
Having launched her make-sake label in New York in 2011, the brand has since moved to Los Angeles where Tyler grew up and now lives. It is unsurprising then, that Tyler has built up a loyal A-list following from Cindy Crawford, Gigi Hadid, Demi Moore to Reese Witherspoon and Karlie Kloss all sporting her arm candy on the red carpet and beyond.
To celebrate the launch of her Spring/Summer 2018 line, Tyler threw an intimate dinner with Maria Kastani at The Arts Club, London. Guests included Helen Downie (The Unskilled Worker), fine art photographer Anouska Beckwith, Camilla Rutherford, Carmen Haid, artist-come-model Idina Moncreiffe and not forgetting Daisy de Villeneuve, who also provided the artistic table decorations.
Tell us about your background…
I studied film and television in college, following in my mother’s footsteps, but quickly realized I couldn’t escape my DNA. I moved from Los Angeles, where I was born and raised and moved to NYC to take a job at Michael Kors, which ended up giving me the confidence to start my own business.
Sum up your brand in a sentence…
Tyler Ellis is a timeless brand with a modern twist, focused on quality and functionality with a sharp, clean aesthetic.
Who do you design for?
Worldly, whimsical women on the go, who appreciate and understand unique luxury designs and crave functionality.
What’s your design/production process?
Inspiration usually comes from my travels. I will sketch something on whatever is near…cocktail napkin, hotel notepad, etc…send the drawing and design notes to my incredible father/son owned factory in Florence, they will then create a first prototype, which I will make final corrections on (if needed) and then the style is ready for production. I am truly lucky to work with such a skilled and detail-oriented team!
How has the brand evolved?
Starting Tyler Ellis has been the most challenging experience of my life but also the most rewarding. My business has grown as my designs have evolved. I like to think of the business and design as two separate things but they fuel each other daily and I’m very excited about what the future can bring!
Which is your signature style?
One of my earliest designs, the Jamie Doctor bag, is a signature style because of its sleek, custom-made, slide lock closure and its structured shape allows for what seems like a small bag, to hold a lot more than one might think. Hollywood has put my Lee pouchette on the map. The Lee has clean lines, a simple shape, back pocket, detachable cross-body chain and feels great in the hand. I do a lot in velvet and satin for red carpet, so the bag complements the gown, rather than overpowering it. It’s been incredible seeing so many strong, talented, beautiful, women walking the red carpet with my clutch!
Are there any markets you are looking to hit?
I recently collaborated with the Bahrain based brand Noon by Noor. We took two of my styles, the Lee pouchette and the Kelly Box, and paired them with their SS’18 ready to wear collection which was shown at New York Fashion Week. I’m hoping to bring Tyler Ellis to the region, and more broadly to the Middle East. My husband and I will be spending New Years in Dubai…so much to explore!!
Proudest/happiest fashion moment to date?
Cindy Crawford recently carried my Perry Clutch, designed after my engagement ring, named after my late father, Perry Ellis. She put up a video of her with walking with the clutch sparkling in her hand, which was incredible! Iconic by her own right, Cindy was also one of my father’s runway models in the
‘80’s. It was surreal seeing her, still so beautiful, walk the walk with my clutch! Cindy’s daughter Kaia Gerber, has also been spotted around town toting my designs…it’s an honor to have these two beauties choosing Tyler Ellis!
